When Do You Need a Breast Implant Revision?

Breast augmentation with implants is the most popular cosmetic surgery performed in America. With so many women having implants placed, it’s inevitable that sometimes breast implant revision surgery will be needed. There are a number of reasons a woman might choose to undergo revision surgery, ranging from dissatisfaction to complications.

Our breast revision surgeons at UCI Plastic Surgery have extensive experience helping you correct problems with your initial breast implants. Call us today at 714-456-3077 to schedule your initial consultation.

Reasons for Breast Augmentation Revision

Some of the most common reasons for needing or wanting a breast augmentation revision are:

  • Dissatisfaction with your final results
  • Capsular contracture
  • Ruptured implant
  • Implant that has migrated outside the pocket

If you don’t take the time to try out different sizes or if your communication with your surgeon wasn’t clear enough, it could lead to your final results being different than what you had hoped for. However, it also takes some time to get used to your new body shape, so most surgeons will recommend waiting for at least six months before even considering revision surgery.

Capsular contracture happens when scar tissue around the implant hardens and tightens, causing discomfort and aesthetic concerns. Capsular contracture can be treated without needing a full revision in some cases where it is caught early enough, so be sure to see your surgeon as soon as possible if you feel anything abnormal in your breast.

Ruptured or migrated implants will require revision surgery, as the implant must be taken out and repositioned (in the case of rupture, replaced).

What Does Revision Breast Surgery Cost?

The cost of revision breast surgery will depend on the extent and complexity of the surgical procedures necessary. Some types of surgery are more complex than others, such as capsular contracture removal or fixing an implant that has migrated towards the breastbone.

The cost will also be affected by whether or not you need a new implant. If you are repositioning your existing implants, you won’t need to factor in the cost of new implants. The cost may also be affected if you are switching from less expensive saline implants to more expensive silicone implants.

Our plastic surgeons will give you a quote for your revision surgery during your consultation. If you are concerned about the cost, please ask us about financing options for your procedure.

Recovery from Breast Augmentation Revision

Recovery from revision breast surgery is typically very similar to recovery from initial breast augmentation surgery. You will need to take some time off of work, and you will need to restrict your physical activities for at least 3 weeks.

We will prescribe pain medications to help with any discomfort for the first few days, and we will be available to answer any questions you may have during your recovery. We will give you comprehensive recovery instructions to help make sure you heal as quickly and smoothly as possible.
