Facial Reconstruction in Orange County, CA
Reconstructive facial surgery can correct birth defects, such as a cleft palate, or repair damage to the face from injury or illness. By restoring an attractive and natural-looking appearance, facial reconstruction can boost a person’s self-esteem and enable them to enjoy life more fully, without being self-conscious about their appearance.
The surgeons at UCI Plastic Surgery have extensive experience in this highly specialized surgery. They have training and expertise in reconstructive and aesthetic facial surgery, so their focus is on both function and appearance. They use cutting-edge technology and techniques such as microvascular surgery, free tissue transfer, and distraction osteogenesis to achieve superior results. They work with you to design a treatment plan customized to your needs.
Cleft lip and cleft palate repair is reconstructive surgery to repair a birth defect of the lip or the roof of the mouth. These relatively common birth defects can cause problems in breathing, feeding, and speech, and can leave a child more vulnerable to colds, cavities, and ear infections. It can take more than one surgery to repair cleft lip or cleft palate, beginning when the child is 6 to 12 months old.
Craniofacial reconstruction corrects deformities of the face and head, which may result from birth defects, injury, or illness. This surgery requires the skills of both a neurosurgeon and a plastic surgeon, as it involves the skull (cranium) as well as the brain, nerves, eyes, and facial skin and musculature. The procedure may require bone grafts or metal plates to create a more normal structure.
Earlobe repair corrects defects in the earlobes that have occurred due to injury or the wearing of heavy earrings. Earlobe repair can reduce the size of earlobes that have stretched and become enlarged. It can also treat earlobes that have torn, as can happen when an earring catches on clothes and gets pulled. The surgery creates a normal-looking, beautiful earlobe. Patients can get their ears re-pierced later.
Facial reanimation surgery restores balance and movement to one or both sides of the face after facial nerve paralysis, which can be present at birth or result from cancer or trauma. In addition to causing facial asymmetry and distortion, facial nerve paralysis makes it difficult or impossible to smile, breathe, or close and protect the eyes. Facial reanimation surgery aims to protect the eyes, achieve facial harmony, and restore dynamic and natural facial expressions.
