Before beginning your dermabrasion treatment, your skin will be carefully cleansed at the treatment site. An anesthetic will likely be administered to improve your comfort during treatment. To perform the procedure, your plastic surgeon will move the abrading handpiece over the surface of your skin. As the handpiece attachment passes over your skin, it will spin and slough off the outer layers. When dermabrasion treatment has been completed, an ointment will be applied to the treatment site, and a surgical dressing will also be used to protect the skin.

What happens after treatment?

When you return home after your dermabrasion treatment, you will have aftercare instructions. Your dressings will need to be changed regularly and you may need to reapply the ointment. The full recovery time after dermabrasion is one to two weeks. During this time, you will need to take care to protect your skin from the sun. As your skin heals, the texture of your skin will improve as your body produces new collagen.
